Come as you are. Grow in Christ.
NEWS & EVENTS
This Sunday begins the season of Advent. Advent is a Christian season of preparation for Christmas, which involves waiting and reflecting on both the birth of Jesus and his promised second coming. It is a four-week period that begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas and is marked by traditions like lighting an Advent Wreath, using Advent calendars, and focusing on themes of hope, peace, joy, and love. The name “Advent” comes from the Latin word for “coming” or “arrival”. It refers to both Jesus’s first coming as a baby at Christmas and his anticipated second coming.
Sundays begin with Sunday School from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. This Sunday, November 30, Ruskin Falls will lead the class in considering the concluding chapters of Richard David Precht’s, Who Am I? And If So, How Many? The concluding chapters are, “The Distant Garden: Can Happiness Be Learned?” and “The Matrix Machine: Does Life Have Meaning?”. All are welcome to join us. While reading Precht’s book is a wonderful exercise in philosophical reflection, reading the various chapters of the book ahead of time is not required.
Worship begins at 10:45 a.m. We would delight in having you join us in-person!
Sunday, November 30, the text for Rev. Ruskin Falls’ sermon is Jeremiah 31:31-34.
The hymns for this Sunday are #106, “Prepare the Way, O Zion” and #140, “Once in Royal David’s City.”
The next sack-lunch gathering of the Cinephiles, a cinema-loving group, will be Thursday, December 4 from 11:00a.m. to 1:00p.m. They will be watching The Nativity Story. In a story of profound faith revered by much of humanity, one young woman struggles with the destiny for which she is chosen--to give birth to the Son of God and to become the object of salvation for billions of souls--a deeply moving journey told in A Nativity Story.
In October 2021, Ruskin published a book of sermons entitled, Metanoia and Other Sermons. The book can be ordered through Amazon, Barnes and Noble, or Wordsworth. You can find more information about the book at this link: Metanoia and Other Sermons
Unless otherwise designated, money given to our church is placed in what we call the General Fund, through which we cover our regular operating and mission expenses. We also have two special funds through which we fund our work. They are: the Cliff and Audie Lee Jones Ministry Fund, for helping people in financial crisis toward courage, hope, and new opportunity; and the Building Fund, for tending to our building, grounds, and furnishings beyond regular upkeep and maintenance. To donate to these special funds, simply note on your check or envelope the fund you are giving to or you can donate through our website (click the “Donations” button).
